Need a random trap to throw at your players? Fear no more, we have what you’re looking for. Or at least something like it. Hey, you may have to jury-rig it and fuse a few wire, but it should run. More or less.
The traps suggested are generic; they may need a little adaptation to your game system of choice. Some may seem familiar; they’ve made the rounds on the internet in various forms, and it’s nigh impossible not to be inspired by them in some way or other.
Have an idea of your own? Feel very encouraged to add it in the comments or mail it to us. We’re delighted to give credit and a linkback for usable traps suggestions.

The adventurers come across a classic mosaic floor covering the entirety of a narrow corridor; each tile is embossed with a pictogram depicting a common household animal. They need to guess which animal depicts the safe way across; the rest will cause the floor to crumble and fall away if stepped on. The solution is simple: After all, the humble dog is man’s best friend.
Our heroes enter a room where two pressure plates are concealed in the floor. The first triggers a spell that extinguishes any light sources and shrouds the room in darkness. The second releases a small shower of pebbles from the floor, each enchanted to give off light. The rapid change from pitch black darkness to brighter-than-daylight renders the characters blind for a while — during which they’re easy prey for an ambush.
Our heroes enter a long gallery in which mist gathers on the walls — a damp, underground installation, nothing immediately weird about that. However, the moisture is hallucinogenic, and the longer the characters breathe the air in here, the more vivid their hallucinations. Bonus points if they end up fighting one another in the belief that they’re surrounded by monsters. To generate more suggestions, simply refresh the page.
