Life in a city of some size is never dull. The poor huddle for warmth behind the churches and mansions of the upper crust, thieves and smugglers dodge the king’s guards, merchants hunt for the perfect bargain, and most people simply try to survive.

A young candle maker sells beautiful candles fit for a church or temple at a ridiculously low price—but why does he or she so desperately need to raise funds?
A group of thugs cut the heroes off in an alley and demand a toll to pass.
A fortune teller or seer approaches the characters. Real deal or conman?
Two rival gangs, thieves’ guilds or other criminal organisations of the town have fallen out, both accusing the other of stealing a very valuable item or asset. Rumours abound around the taverns and tap rooms of the city, as well as speculation about what this item or asset might actually be. Might it in fact have been nicked by a third party? What about its rightful owner from whom it was originally stolen?
An old enemy or rival who is supposed to be dead, out of town, or otherwise indisposed, is recognised in passing by one of the heroes. Is this a case of mistaken identities and unfortunate resemblances, or did That Guy really return from the dead to pester the heroes once more?
