Life in a city of some size is never dull. The poor huddle for warmth behind the churches and mansions of the upper crust, thieves and smugglers dodge the king’s guards, merchants hunt for the perfect bargain, and most people simply try to survive.

A married couple get into a loud argument in the street, possibly coming to blows.
A merchant tries to solicit his exotic pets, ranging from colourful parakeets to great hunting cats in cages. Cats may or may not be tamed and trained.
The heavens open and a torrential downpour begins, causing people and animals in the street to bolt for shelter. The heroes may find themselves making new friends under awnings and in crowded shops.
Torrential rains cause a section of the city sewer to collapse, sending vast amounts of homeless rats into the streets looking for food and shelter. In poor neighbourhoods and slums, beggars and destitutes also may be in trouble.
Don’t diss the classics; the heroes are approached by a concerned parent, or otherwise come into contact with a young woman wasting away from an unidentifiable disease and sleepwalking at night. She is the victim of a vampire feeding on her night after night until she eventually succumbs. In the best of Lucy Westenra style, the young woman will not tell anyone about her nightly visitor and fancies herself deeply in love with the vampire (who will forget her the instant she’s dead – in fact, he’s already got his eyes on his next lovely young victim). Bonus points for role reversal—the maid is a young man, and the vampire is a lady of high society.
