Traps!

Need a random trap to throw at your players? Fear no more, we have what you’re looking for. Or at least something like it. Hey, you may have to jury-rig it and fuse a few wire, but it should run. More or less.

The traps suggested are generic; they may need a little adaptation to your game system of choice. Some may seem familiar; they’ve made the rounds on the internet in various forms, and it’s nigh impossible not to be inspired by them in some way or other.

Have an idea of your own? Feel very encouraged to add it in the comments or mail it to us. We’re delighted to give credit and a linkback for usable traps suggestions.

A heavy stone door, upon which sits an iron mask depicting a demonic face, blocks the way. There is no doorknob or other visible way to open the door. As the party approaches, the mask animates, greeting them and demanding a living sacrifice to let them through. While the mask will make it seem that one of the characters must die, it will in fact settle for the life of any warm-blooded creature — even a mouse.
A key hangs on a hook next to a locked door. Suspicious characters will search for traps, but there are none to find. The key, however, crumbles to dust once touched. The real key is concealed in a secret wall compartment. Have fun searching!
Our intrepid adventurers enter a gallery full of curious paintings. On closer inspection, the paintings are strangely alluring — one feels drawn to them, perhaps even into them. And so it is: each painting is a gateway to the tiny pocket reality it depicts. In each reality, the characters must deal with the situation portrayed. A battle scene may require fighting; a ballroom may force them to play courtiers. The key to the door ahead is in one of these pocket realities.
